In 2012, Hayashi et al. reported a new uniform protocol of combined corticosteroid injections and ointment application after keloid or hypertrophic scar excision. We use this corticosteroid treatment as well as electron-beam irradiation for keloids and hypertrophic scars, depending on the situation.
In our hospital, from 2008 to 2011, 40 patients were treated with the combined corticosteroid protocol, and five were treated with electron-beam irradiation, after keloid or hypertrophic scar excision. We retrospectively determined why patients had chosen their treatment.
